Romantic destinations in Europe

Europe is home to some of the most romantic cities in the world, including Paris, Venice, Prague, Rome and Vienna. It is the perfect destination for a romantic break, such as a honeymoon or a vacation to celebrate a special anniversary or proposal. If you’re thinking about a romantic vacation in Europe, here is our guide to the most romantic cities in Europe.

Paris

Paris has long been considered the most romantic destination in Europe and is well known as the city of love. It is the perfect location for a proposal, with many iconic sights to pop the question, including the Eiffel Tower.

Romantic activities to enjoy along with the Eiffel Tower are Le Mur des Je t'Aime, which is an enormous tiled mural with the words “I Love You” written in 250 languages and a glass of Champagne in one of the cities many exclusive champagne bars. You could also enjoy a romantic picnic at one of the city’s parks, such as Jardin des Tuileries or Parc des Buttes-Chaumont.

Venice

The Floating City is rarely missed off a list of must-see destinations in Europe and it is also one of the most romantic and magical cities you could hope to visit. It has been the city of choice for many celebrity weddings, including George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin.

Combining Venice into a multi-center tour of Italy makes for a wonderful honeymoon or special vacation, and there are many romantic activities that you can enjoy, such as a gondola ride down the Grand Canal, with an optional serenade, wine-tasting tours and theater shows. You could even arrange a private cooking class to make a special meal that you can enjoy together.

Prague

No list of romantic cities in Europe would be complete without the beautifully vibrant city of Prague. The architecture is simply stunning and it is particularly lovely to visit around Christmas, when the city oozes winter charm.

If you’re planning a proposal in Prague, consider visiting Cesky Granat Turnov, where you could choose a garnet-set ring. We also recommend a trip to the Estates Theater as a special, romantic treat, which is one of Prague’s three opera houses.

Rome

While Rome is perhaps best known for its ancient artefacts and structures, including the Colosseum, Roman Forum and its infamous catacombs and crypts, it also has many secluded and romantic places to enjoy on your romantic break, including its beautiful fountains such as the Trevi Fountain. Popular romantic destinations include the Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona and Gianicolo Hill (Janiculum), which is outside the ancient city and gives the most stunning views of the city.

There are also plenty of romantic tours you can enjoy in Rome too, such as private cooking classes, wine-tasting tours and day trips to beautiful cities, such as Tivoli and Ostia Antica.

Vienna

As the Austrian capital, Vienna is bursting with romance and charm. It is well known for its opera and we very much recommend arranging a night at the opera as a part of your romantic trip. There are also several very beautiful royal residences that you can visit during the day and, as a romantic treat, you can enjoy a ride in a horse-drawn carriage.

Other romantic activities to consider are afternoon tea at Café Sacher amongst the chandeliers and oil paintings – it’s the perfect place to enjoy Sachertorte chocolate cake, and you can also enjoy the Vienna cityscape on a ride on the Riesenrad Ferris wheel, which is particularly romantic at night.

Florence

Tuscany is well regarded as one of the most romantic regions in Italy thanks to its rolling countryside, beautiful vineyards and quaint towns and villages. Florence is one of our most favorite destinations in Italy. Be sure to enjoy visits to the Uffizi Gallery and Galleria dell'Accademia to see the stunning artistic masterpieces, as well as wine-tasting tours in the Chianti region. You can also enjoy a night-time tour or a day trip to the Cinque Terre.

Barcelona

Barcelona is one of Spain’s most popular tourist destinations and its mix of city sights and beach resorts makes for a particularly romantic destination. It’s a great choice for a honeymoon and combines well with other European cities if you are thinking about a multi-center tour.

As a special treat, consider a hot-air balloon ride over the city or perhaps a guided segway or GoCar tour. Also consider a private tour of Andorra as a wonderful day trip.
